ROI
One of the most common measures of profitability, which can indicate whether spending money on a CT, MRI, and/or PET/CT program is a good use of your facility's resources, is ROI (return on investment). It is calculated by dividing net income by the cost of the investment. Net income can be approximated by looking at the demand, payer mix, and utilization rate for various CT, MRI, or PET/CT procedures in your market and estimating your revenues. The investment number includes the cost of the equipment under each financing option, and also the cost of running the program (including the costs of staffing, marketing, any needed construction, and administration). Given the number of variables contributing to the ROI calculation, changing the structure of your proposed program can increase your return on your investment.
When looking to add CT, MRI, and/or PET/CT either as a brand new technology to your facility or as a supplemental service, there are a number of questions to answer, such as:
- purchase or lease
- monthly fee or fee per scan
- facility staffed unit or staffed by Shared Medical Services
- mobile, parked, modular, or in-house system
When working through the process of determining what solutions are best for your facility, consideration should be given to:
- reasons for adding the modality, including how the program supports or contributes to your facility’s overall mission
- equipment selection
- procedures
- logistics
- demand
- management
- staffing
- marketing
- financial analysis
